Dark Balsamic Vinegar
Dark balsamic has been used for centuries as a soothing tonic or balsam for the mind, spirit and body, hence the name. It is also known to have been used as far back as medieval times for flavouring meats and vegetables. Now hugely popular around the world, until recently many families in Italy made small amounts only for their own consumption.
Our dark balsamic has intense sweet and sour flavours and is best used as a dressing coupled with a good quality extra virgin olive oil, cracked pepper and sea salt. It can also be used with your favourite olive oil as a dipping sauce with crusty bread or to marinate certain fruits, eg strawberries before serving with ice cream.
For those bloody mary fans out there you can also add a few teaspoons of our dark balsamic for a bit of extra zest.
White Balsamic Vinegar
White Balsamic Vinegar is actually white wine vinegar blended with wine must that hasn’t been caramelised. It is the cousin of traditional dark balsamic vinegar, without the aging in barrels, usually made from the must of the Trebbiano grape and selected white wine vinegar. Our white balsamic is light straw in colour and has the similar sweet characteristic of dark balsamic.
White Balsamic is ideal for use in salad dressings or to use in making gravy from the pan juices of your favourite roast meat. We use it as the base ingredient in our must-have White Balsamic and Mustard Dressing.
Caramelised Balsamic
Our caramelised balsamic vinegar is the centrepiece of our range and is made by reducing balsamic vinegar until it is thick and rich, sweetening in the process. The texture is velvety and the flavour is deliciously sweet – we believe there’s no better!
Ideal for use as a dipping sauce with your favourite extra virgin olive oil and warm crusty bread. Alternately you can use to baste most meats, chicken and fish on the barbecue or when roasting in the oven. Add a drizzle to steamed veggies for something a little different. For an interesting alternative to cheese on toast - spread your favourite toast with a little Philly cheese and drizzle Simply Original Caramelised Balsamic over the top.
This last serving suggestion was discovered by my wonderful husband.
Enjoy!
